Fort Fisher
Fort Fisher was fully established as the "Gibralter of the South" in the early 1860s and would eventually signal the beginning of the end as it fell in 1865. Upon falling into control of the North, the Confederacy was no longer able to uphold their supply chain and eventually surrendered. Fort Fisher played a critical role in ending the Civil War and still stands today as a mark of the United States complicated history.
You can visit and take tours of Fort Fisher during your time in Oak Island and learn more about the fort's role in the war and in the culture of the Carolina coast. Admission is free and with plenty to learn, it's a great educational stop during your vacation!
